Acupuncture for Gynecology

Regulating Hormone patterns is an important aspect of Acupuncture theory.

Acupuncture has treatments for many aspects of women’s health, aspects that are sometimes poorly treated in other ways. For instance hot flushes or anxiety in menopause, or painful periods in our younger years. The changes we make as we transition through life have all been studied by chinese medicine.

There is a growing body of evidence to support acupuncture as a suitable treatment for these complaints (see the evidence for acupuncture page), as well as the many relieved women over the years who have had acupuncture treatments.

Treating Menstrual Problems with Acupuncture

Women should have a 28 day cycle without requiring painkillers, flooding, bleeding outside of our cycle, or suffer with PMT.

Even if you have had period pain or problems for many years it may be able to be improved.  Headaches around period time are also treated by balancing our hormones.  Acupuncture has been shown to have a very beneficial effect for regulating periods and relieving pain.

Studies have shown that 72% of women in Gothenburg, Sweden had period pain, and 50% of these women took time off work or school because of the pain, 8% took time off every month. Treatments from western medicine at the moment include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oral contraceptives.

Randomised controlled trials on acupuncture show between 80-90% effectiveness.  Randomised controlled trials are very difficult to work with because only a small number of acupuncture points are used and they are the same on every patient.  In real acupuncture sessions a selection of points are used that may change as the condition improves.  To achieve such good results in a randomised controlled trial proves how good acupuncture is at balancing our hormones to relieve symptoms we should all be without.

  • Pain
  • Heavy bleeding
  • PMT
  • Irregular cycles
  • Dark or clotted blood

Treatment is usually spaced out at fortnightly or three weekly intervals, or at the time of the month when the symptoms are happening.
